EARLY bird registrations are now open for the inaugural Torquay Triathlon Super Sprint, taking place on November 10.

Event organisers and Torquay locals Andrew Letts and Lisa Anderson were having to travel to compete in triathlons and have spent the more than a year planning the Torquay competition.

“Torquay has all these facilities, we’ve got such a wonderful environment,” Ms Anderson said.

“We’ve got all these different groups, we’ve got the swim club, the run club, cycling groups and what better way to bring the community together than to have a triathlon in Torquay.”

The pair got into triathlons from different fitness journeys but enjoy how people of all different levels can be on the same course and the friendly and supportive environment they create.

The Super Sprint Triathlon is a shorter course, with participants taking on a 400-metre ocean swim followed by a 15-kilometre bike ride and finishing with the four-kilometre run.

Elephant Walk will be home to the event village, with the race starting off with the swimmers heading out from Fisherman’s Beach.

The cyclists will then ride along The Esplanade and up Horseshoe Bend Road where they will turn around and head up towards The Sands, completing the course twice.

For the running leg, participants will make their way from Elephant Walk to the Torquay Surf Life Saving Club where they will turn around at the two-kilometre mark.

“It’s going to be a challenge for some people and we really want that to be rewarding; I think Torquay is just absolutely stunning and to run on that path to bring it home,” Mr Letts said.

Having never organised an event like this before, the pair has been supported and mentored by Triathlon Australia in the delivery of the race.

Volunteers are also needed on the day of the triathlon to help the event run smoothly.

Participants can compete individually or as part of a team.
