RGYC pulls pin on fireworks display

January 16, 2020 BY

The annual fireworks display will not take place this year.

THE Royal Geelong Yacht Club (RGYC) has cancelled its annual Australia Day fireworks display in response to the growing number of fire victims across the country.

Royal Geelong Yacht Club commodore John Kint said while the decision may disappoint some people, the club and the City of Greater Geelong felt it was a “respectful acknowledgement” of the continuing bushfire crisis.

“We are currently investigating if there are other entertainment options which may be more appropriate.”

City of Greater Geelong mayor Stephanie Asher said the council was pleased with the decision.

“I wrote to the RGYC on behalf of the council group, outlining feedback from the community that it would be appropriate to avoid fireworks in greater Geelong during this time.

“We’re hopeful that the RGYC will find an alternative for the Australia Day celebrations at a time when spirits across Australia really could do with a lift.”
