THE Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach has gone down as a major success, delivering both economic and social vitality to the region.
Between 35,000 and 40,000 people attended the event, which ran from April 18 to April 28, with more than 50 per cent coming from beyond the Surf Coast region.
The global exposure of the surfing classic saw occupancy rates reach 92 per cent over the event period.
Surf Coast Shire mayor
Mike Bodsworth said the shire would soon welcome the World Surf League’s post-event report, but it was estimated the event delivered more than $8 million into the local economy each year.
“There’s nothing quite like the buzz and excitement that the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach brings.
“This event helps cement Torquay’s status as Australia’s surfing capital, and Bells as the spiritual home of surfing in Australia.
“Not only is our stunning coast broadcast across the world to 38 countries, we’re also proud to welcome international visitors and people from across Australia who come to our region to attend the event and watch the world’s best surfers.”
Commerce Torquay president Sarah Minter said the surfing event again raised the profile of the region.
“It is always exciting when the Rip Curl Pro comes to Bells Beach.
“Each year, this world-class surfing event draws visitors to our beautiful coastal town, significantly boosting the local economy.
“Local businesses thrive as they serve locals, visitors, and competitors.”
