Roadside slashing under way in shire

December 5, 2019 BY

Roadside slashing can significantly reduce fire risks.

THE Surf Coast Shire has recently begun slashing grass on roadsides to help make the area more fire safe.

The council will aim to finish its annual fire prevention roadside slashing program before Christmas, though this will be subject to conditions.

Cr Tony Revell said the program was crucial to preventing fires over the coming months.

“As a CFA volunteer firefighter, I know that the flame height of a fire in slashed grass is halved and the rate of spread of the fire is slowed. This makes the fire easier to put out.

“The slashing will also assist road users by improving site distance at intersections.”

Cr Revell also said that people would have to be patient as the program would be carried out in stages.

People with questions about the program can call 5261 0600 or head to surfcoast.vic.gov.au/request.

Regional Roads Victoria (RRV) also carries out a roadside mowing program for its road network. People can find out more about RRV works under way or planned in their local area by visiting www.regionalroads.vic.gov.au/map.
