Scaregun aims to move Leopold corellas

THE City of Greater Geelong will use a scaregun device in an attempt to move a flock of about 300 corellas located in and around the Leopold Memorial Park. From next Thursday, the City will operate the scaregun between 10am and 4pm (excluding ANZAC Day) at 15 to 30 minute intervals, for possibly two weeks.

The method for attempting to disperse the corellas produces loud banging noises (120 decibels), which startles the birds and encourages them to leave and roost in another area. This dispersal measure is considered to be the most humane way to encourage the birds to move on and the work methods are guided by EPA Noise Control Guidelines.

An exclusion zone will be maintained through regular patrols of the area surrounding the scaregun device operator. “We apologise for the disturbance that the noise will cause during the use of these measures to disperse the corellas,” Director of Community Life Linda Quinn said. “The corellas have previously roosted in this area but not for such a significant period of time. “We are taking this course of action in order to prevent any further damage to infrastructure in this area.”

The flock, which has been in the location for about two months, has had a destructive impact on local infrastructure, including lighting at the local sports facilities. The City plans to encourage the dispersal of the flock to another location with the aim of preventing further ongoing damage.

The effectiveness of the measure will be monitored, however, it may be necessary to continue the measures for a second week. Where possible, the sound will be concentrated onto the reserve and away from neighbours including residents, sports’ facilities and the shopping centre. Residents are urged to ensure that their pets are secured as loud noises can startle them and encourage escape.
