Schools compete in Solar Cup
TORQUAY College hosted Surf Coast Energy Group’s (SCEG) fourth annual Solar Cup Educational Challenge last week.
This year the challenge saw pupils from Torquay P-6 College and Deans Marsh Primary School race their own solar-powered boats.
A total of 19 teams and 55 pupils competed in the event, racing their boats against one another.
SCEG ran the challenge for the first time at Aireys Inlet Primary School in 2016, and have expanded it since.
The challenge aims to encourage teamwork and hands-on learning, while also developing students’ interest in clean and renewable energy, helping them to understand both its importance and its potential.
Pupils work in groups to research science and engineering principles related to solar energy.
SCEG is a not-for-profit organisation that aims to promote an understanding of climate change and resource use.
