“Sea sparkle” lights up Jan Juc ocean

A SPECTACULAR algae bloom in the Surf Coast ocean has dazzled onlookers with a shimmering light show in recent days.

 

A bioluminescence event occurred near Bird Rock, Jan Juc last night, causing the ocean to glow in a fluorescent light-blue colour.

Local photographers also spotted the incredible show near Moggs Creek in the past week.

Bioluminescence is the result of a biochemical emission of light by living organisms, creating the striking glow effect that glistened in the dark sea.

The recent display follows an algae bloom near Lorne in the past week that created a similar effect in sunlight, causing parts of the ocean to appear an earth-red colour.

 

 

Authorities said the occasion was naturally occurring, which would dissipate over time due to tides and waves.

“A naturally occurring algae bloom is currently visible along the coast near Lorne. This is common when winds and upwelling brings nutrients to the sea surface,” the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action’s regional office said.

“The bloom is a dense concentration of marine plankton that causes a red-brown discolouration in the water and may be a species known as Noctiluca scintillans that can produce a glowing light at night as the water is disturbed, earning it the name “Sea Sparkle”.

 

“As a precaution, members of the public are advised to avoid direct contact with any affected water, as breakdown products can emit ammonia, wash it off if contact does occur, and seek medical advice if they experience any illness.”

DEECA also said fish caught nearby the bloom should be thoroughly cleaned and have their gills removed prior to cooking.
