FFMV search for new firefighters

FOREST Fire Management Victoria (FFMV) is recruiting people to become Project Firefighters (PFF) ahead of the fire season.

PFFs have full-time employment for a 26-week period, generally taking place between April and November.

Acting deputy chief fire officer David Roberts said becoming a PFF was a great opportunity that is open to a wide range of people.

“We’re looking for people of all walks of life and backgrounds to join Forest Fire Management Victoria over the summer season to help us with bushfire prevention and suppression in parks and forests across the region.

“Successful recruits receive comprehensive training and get the opportunity to work with experienced personnel from a range of fire management agencies. Many past PFFs have gone on to rewarding careers in permanent roles within the department.”

Mr Roberts said working as a PFF had plenty of variety.

“Project Firefighters are on the frontline fighting bushfires, conducting planned burns, managing roadside vegetation, maintaining access to fire trails and roads and supporting other emergency work.

“No two days are the same, and this is a great opportunity to learn new skills and be part of a diverse and inclusive team that helps protect the community.

There are 21 vacant positions for general firefighters in the Barwon South West Region. Several positions have also been identified for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
