Seemed like a good idea at the time: No Farnham in Queenscliff

October 25, 2018 BY

John Farnham was to headline a concert in Queenscliff in early 2019.

JOHN Farnham will not perform in Queenscliff next year after events professionals determined that the large-scale concert he was slated to headline would “negatively impact both residents and the environment”.

In March 2018, the Borough of Queenscliff council resolved to provide in-principle support for the conduct of a music event in Queenscliff, featuring Farnham as the lead artist, in early 2019.

This support was subject to negotiations between council officers and the promoters and the normal council permit process.

In a statement, the borough said it was particularly concerned with implementing an acceptable logistical plan that would not disrupt the community.

Following significant consultation with large-scale events professionals located in Queenscliff and Geelong, it was determined that the event had the potential to negatively impact both residents and the environment.

Borough mayor Susan Salter said while it was disappointing that Queenscliff would no longer be hosting such a large-scale event, the potential negative impacts could not be ignored.

“Through the consultation process a number of key issues were identified, specifically traffic congestion; with one way in and one way out of Queenscliff our local roads would not cope with in excess of 6,000 concert-goers arriving and leaving the one venue at the same time.

“Lack of parking and accommodation options were also raised as a significant concern and whilst alternatives such as park and ride bus services were investigated, no viable options could be established.

“It is regrettable that this concert will not go ahead in the borough, however maintaining a peaceful environment for our residents is a priority for Council.

“Event organisers are currently working on another more appropriate venue.”
