THE Great Ocean Road has re-opened this afternoon (Friday, May 2) after being closed in both directions earlier this morning between Fairhaven and Lorne following a serious road collision.

It is understood a motorcycle and a grey Ford Ranger towing a caravan collided on the Great Ocean Road just after 10.30am.

The rider, who is yet to be formally identified, died at the scene.

The driver, who was the sole occupant of the Ford, was uninjured.

Motorists travelling between Lorne and Fairhaven were asked to detour using Lorne-Deans Marsh Road, the Princes Highway between Winchelsea and Waurn Ponds, and Anglesea Road.

The detours were long and added considerable time to journeys to and from the Great Ocean Road.
