Shire to update polices under Local Government Act

July 9, 2020 BY

The Surf Coast Shire council is creating two new policies due to an update of the Local Government Act 1989.

THE Surf Coast Shire council has placed drafts of its Governance Rules and Public Transparency Policy on public exhibition.
At their June 23 meeting, the council resolved to release the drafts for community comment throughout this month.
The new policies must be adopted by the council by September 1 as a result of the passage of the Local Government Bill 2019 through state Parliament, which replaced the Local Government Act 1989.
According to the report presented to councillors, the draft Governance Rules are designed to be “clear, instructive and provide transparency to the decision-making processes of council”, while the Public Transparency Policy “outlines Council’s commitment to transparency and lists the types of documents/information available from Council via the website and on request”.
The council proposes to hold a hearing of submissions meeting about the new policies on August 4.
