Shire to launch inclusion program to support marginalised groups

May 6, 2021 BY

The free online event scheduled for May 12, has been designed to help members of the Surf Coast Shire find ways to be more inclusive in their day-to-day lives.

The Surf Coast Shire Council will co-host a free online event next week to explore ways to re-engage vulnerable and marginalised community members after the 2020 lockdowns.

To be held via Zoom on May 12 between 9.30am to 11.45am the inclusion project aims to provide participants with practical skills to be more inclusive in their day-to-day lives.

General manager culture and community, Chris Pike, said the session can benefit all members of the community.

“The Surf Coast Shire Inclusion Project was created to help address the need for practical advice for sporting groups, social community groups and small business on everyday inclusion for people who are marginalised in society,” he said.

Facilitated by Kylie White of Wellways and Surf Coast Shire community activation and social inclusion officer Breanna Dixon, the pair will explore the topics of disability, LGBTIQA and cultural inclusion.

“Each topic will include a pre-recorded interview with a person from the community to encourage group discussion and small group work,” Mr Pike said.

“The aim of the discussion is to inspire each participant to come up with solutions and ideas for their own club and workplace.”
