Short film puts spotlight on lockdown silver linings
A TORQUAY visual effects artist has created a stunning short film to inspire Surf Coast residents to maintain an upbeat mindset during lockdown.
Marc Gollenia uploaded his film, Here I Am – A Surfcoast Morning, to YouTube and social media which generated more than 1000 views and a sea of positive comments within the first 24 hours.
The 31-year-old said he produced the video about a morning spent by the ocean after noticing how the uncertain times brought on by COVID-19 had left some people struggling with motivation.
He hopes the 96-second short film will encourage viewers to stay active and make the most of their coastal home.
“I’ve seen a lot of people getting hung up here about what they can’t do anymore and the freedom that’s been taken away from them like having to wear masks or not going out,” Marc said.
“I just wanted to shine a light on what we can still do and what we actually have right in front of our doorstep.
“There is still a lot out there waiting for us and so many things to do that might even be an improvement like spending more time in nature and with family.”
Marc, who hails from Germany, moved to Torquay three years ago after being offered work with Method Studios in Melbourne – an international production company that has worked on blockbuster movies such as Terminator, John Wick 3 and Christopher Robin.
The local creative is currently working from home and is determined to make the most of not having to face the long daily commute.
That includes more time spent surfing and film-making for enjoyment.
His beautifully shot film took about a week-and-a-half in total to shoot and produce.
Marc said he was overwhelmed by the early response to the film which captures quintessential Surf Coast pastimes such as chasing sunrises, surfing, running and walking your dog on the beach.
“The first night when I put the video up, there was so many messages and notifications popping up that I didn’t even know what to say,” he said.
“People were replying saying ‘that’s exactly what I needed right now’ so it seems to have worked.”
Marc travelled Australia for 10 months and lived in Sydney for three years before deciding on Torquay as his “perfect place” to call home.
“I love it here and it’s great to see the video making a little bit of a positive impact,” he said.
“Even if it’s just inspiring one person to get outside and start the day with a positive mindset, that’s amazing.”
