THE annual fire prevention roadside slashing program has started on the Surf Coast, with the slashing of Surf Coast Shire council reserves scheduled for the coming fire season.

Local contractors have started works in the north of the shire and will work their way south over the next three to four weeks, depending on weather.

Surf Coast Shire mayor Libby Stapleton said the program played a vital role in keeping the community safe.

“We live in one of the most beautiful parts of Australia, but with that beauty comes one of the highest fire risks in Victoria.

“The slashing program is one of the many ways we work to reduce fire hazards across the shire, and we are asking residents to do their part.”

Shire officers have also been inspecting properties across the shire and issuing Fire Prevention Notices to help reduce bushfire risk on private land.

Property owners are also asked to play their part in protecting the shire this summer.

“We all need to make sure we are ready for the fire season,” Cr Stapleton said.

“If you receive a Fire Prevention Notice, please act quickly. These notices are issued to protect you, your neighbours and the wider community.”
