Slice of Torquay history on show
THE Torquay and District Historical Society will host an exclusive exhibition showcasing never-before-seen photographs which have been collected by a Torquay family since the 1850s.
Now in the hands of Don Duffield, Don has offered his collection to the society to celebrate the origins of his family who arrived to the Torquay and Bellbrae area in 1852.
Many of the photos are extremely rare, serving as a visual timeline exploring how Torquay has progressed since the white settlers first arrived in the 1840s.
President of the society David Marshall said he’s thrilled to welcome Don’s collection to the space.
“Don’s family have been in this area since the 1850s and he has been collecting the history for most of his life,” he said.
“A man in his 80s, he has now decided to allow us the privilege of displaying his collection over the summer months on loan.
“This exhibition is not to be missed, particularly with the historic knowledge and attendance of Don Duffield on Sunday December 23.”
The exhibition officially opens on Sunday December 23 at 1pm until 4pm at the Torquay and District Historical Society – Torquay Old Police Station, 18 Price Street, Torquay.
Afternoon tea will be served at 3pm.
