Smooth run for Barwon Regatta’s 142nd year

THE Barwon River has welcomed its first mass regatta of the rowing season welcoming 1,759 athletes.

School and club rowers competed in 314 races, with a race run every three minutes across the two days of action.

St Kevin’s took home the Frank Covill Cup in the Division 1 Male School Eight.

Rowing Geelong president Sam Elliott said the Barwon Regatta was fast becoming one of the biggest weekends in the region’s events calendar, again seeing a large number of entries.

“It’s great to have so many schools and clubs down rowing on the Barwon River here in Geelong this weekend,” Mr Elliot said.

1,759 athletes and hundreds of boats returned to the Barwon River over Saturday and Sunday.

“We are one of the oldest and longest running regattas in the state. The region is jam packed full of visitors for multiple events so it’s great that we can share the weekend alongside them.

“The local clubs and schools were well represented with strong numbers particularly from Barwon & Corio Bay Rowing Clubs.

Geelong College were again the host school at the regatta.

“It was also great to see Kardinia International College, Clonard College and Sacred Heart College match it with some of the larger schools from Melbourne.”

St Kevin’s took home the Frank Covill Cup in the Division 1 Male School Eight and St Catherine’s took out the Division 1 Female School Eight.

Melbourne Girls College took out the City of Greater Geelong Division 1 Female School Coxed Quad Scull.

In the club races, Corio Bay Rowing Club in their 150th year took out both Male and Female Club Quad Scull and the sculler Joyce from Barwon Rowing Club came a close second in the Female Club Single Scull.
