THE Surf Coast community turned out in strong numbers during NAIDOC Week to hear from First Nations people about their connections with Sea Country.

The ‘Spirit of Surfing’ panel show featured Wadawurrung Traditional Owner Corinna Eccles, Munna Munna man and Surfing Victoria Indigenous aquatics manager Jordie Campbell and Wiradjuri woman and local artist Jessi Rebel.

Discussion was led by Djab Wurrung and Gunditjimara woman and Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority chief executive officer Jodie Sizer.

Surf Coast Shire acting mayor Mike Bodsworth said it was fantastic to see a packed house in attendance at the Australian National Surfing Museum.

“NAIDOC Week invites us to recognise and celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

“Corrina, Jordie and Jessi helped deepen our understanding with their heartfelt reflections on this year’s NAIDOC Week theme, the connections they feel with Sea Country through surfing, and the importance of families and friendship, connection with community, and mentorship.

“Their relaxed conversation really resonated and it was wonderful to see the audience so respectfully engaged.”

The 2024 NAIDOC Week theme encouraged community to “Keep the Fire Burning!” – honouring the strength and vitality of First Nations culture.
