THE birds are singing, the grass is lush, and the sun is out — all signs that Spring Carnival season is nearly here.

It all begins on Wednesday, October, 22, with the much-anticipated Geelong Cup. Ladies don their finest outfits; men step out in sharp suits — it’s become the unofficial dress rehearsal for the Melbourne Cup.

For some, it’s a day to unwind; for others, it marks the exciting start of something truly special.

For Victoria Police, the coming Spring Carnival season serves as a timely reminder to those planning to celebrate that they will be out in force — not only to help ensure everyone enjoys the festivities, but also to maintain the safety and wellbeing of the broader community.

Alcohol plays a significant role in many aspects of Australian culture, and effectively reducing alcohol-related harm requires a comprehensive and collaborative approach.

Victoria Police is committed to fostering a safe, secure, and orderly community — one free from alcohol-related crime, violence, and harm. But they can’t do it alone — officers need the support of the community.

As you enjoy the celebrations in the coming weeks, Victoria Police encourage you to keep the following in mind:

Nominate a designated driver or make use of public transport Never drink and drive

If you’re consuming alcohol, stay hydrated with water and steer clear of caffeinated beverages

Make sure to eat regularly throughout the day, and

Always have a friend looking out for you and have a safety plan in place.

Miscalculation of alcohol consumption is one of the most common reasons given to police when drivers are caught over the limit – suggesting many people are prepared to risk having a few drinks before getting behind the wheel.

“We need everyone to completely separate the behaviours of drinking and driving – they don’t mix,” Acting Senior Sergeant Stephen Bull said.

With Victoria Police conducting more than three million breath tests annually, their goal is for all road users to take responsibility for their actions and make safer choices — not just for themselves, but for their passengers and everyone sharing the road this Spring Carnival season.
