Spring garden showcase
LOCAL garden-lovers can explore some of Torquay’s finest private gardens next month at a new environmental festival.
The Torquay Open Gardens will be held on October 26 and share the beauty and diversity of four of the region’s best gardens.
Attendees will have the chance to view coastal hideaways, native filled courtyards and finely clipped hedges.
Torquay Open Gardens founder Matt Knight said the event was born out of a love of landscapes and a common horticultural passion running through the town.
“I’m a landscape architect by trade and I have always had an interest in the outdoors.
“Since moving to Torquay ten years ago, I’ve been impressed by the beauty of our outdoors areas and the exuberance of many people’s gardens.
“After attending an open garden event in London years ago, its inspired me to do something similar here in Torquay. Great gardens are certainly worth celebrating.”
The free event will have different food and drink options available at each of the four private gardens.
Any donations collected to enter the gardens will support the work of local not-for-profit therapeutic surf charity Ocean Mind.
Ocean Mind founder Raechel Parker said she was thrilled to be partnering up with Torquay Open Gardens for the event.
“It’s super nice Matt thought of us for this one.
“Any money raised will go towards expanding and delivering our services across the Surf Coast.
“We have high hopes for our 2024/25 season and this will go a long way in achieving them.”
