MORE than 150 people have celebrated spring setting in by exploring a selection of Torquay’s finest private gardens.

The Torquay Open Gardens environmental festival shared the beauty and rich diversity of five local gardens.

Attendees viewed a few smaller curated gardens as well as large acreages abundant with bird life and native flora.

More than 150 people took in the flora and fauna at five local gardens in Torquay.

Organiser Matt Knight said he was pleased with the success of what is set to be the first of many local garden showcases.

“It was just great. To have over 150 people venture through the gardens was a really strong start in our first one.

“People said they took a lot of inspiration out of seeing various types of ways to set out a garden.

A selection of the gardens also served sweets and treats for event attendees.

“The community spirit was incredible, and people were super grateful to see something like this up and about.”

While the event was free to attend, any donations made supported the work of non-for-profit therapeutic surf charity Ocean Mind.

More than $1,000 was raised from donations by community members throughout the day.

The event featured both small curated gardens and large acreages abundant with flora and fauna.
