CONSTRUCTION on stage two of the Armstrong Creek Town Centre is expected to begin before June.

HMC Capital’s $45 million expansion plans received ministerial approval late last year.

At the centre of the plans for the site, which is to be located to the east of the existing retail hub, is a 3,500sqm Woolworths supermarket and a 2,100sqm retail space, associated with the supermarket to enable customers to order items online and pick up from the premises “direct to boot”.

A spokesperson for HMC Capital said the organisation was pleased to have received approval for the expansion and was now working closely with its builder on preparations.

“The expansion will provide an enhanced retail offer to the growing Armstrong Creek community.

“There will be a new Woolworths supermarket, Woolworths click and collect, Woolworths home delivery hub and associated retail spaces, all of which will provide further choice for local residents and enhance the overall convenience of the existing town centre.

“We expect to commence construction before the middle of the year.”

According to the plans, the design of the new retail offering will be contemporary in nature, and vehicle access to the site is proposed from two existing crossovers from Degraves Street and a proposed crossover located from Lagoon Street.

The existing crossover from Exhibition Street will be removed.

Construction is also expected to begin next month on the highly anticipated Armstrong Creek Sports Centre – one of three Geelong projects being developed through the Regional Sports Infrastructure Program being rolled out in the wake of the cancellation of the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

The new indoor centre will feature four multi-sport courts, a café and gathering space, changing facilities and a sensory room.

Opening out onto a civic plaza, the centre will also include outdoor activation areas and open space, with basketball and netball hoops, areas for skating, as well as informal and nature play spaces.

“We are pleased to see that the state government has also committed to providing new first-class sporting facilities in the town centre, which we believe will be a valuable enhancement to recreational facilities for the local community,” the HMC Capital spokesperson said.

Member for Western Victoria and Minister for Regional Development Gayle Tierney was contacted for comment but had not responded as this paper went to print.
