Street renaming to clear up confusion

EAST Geelong’s McNeill Court will be renamed Chapman Crescent in honour of two sisters who served with the Royal Australian Air Force during World War II.

Entry to McNeill Court is via McNeill Avenue, and the similarity between the two names has caused confusion.

The City of Greater Geelong is making the change at the request of local residents.

The new name recognises former East Geelong locals Mildred and Beryl Chapman.

Mildred enlisted with the RAAF in May 1942 at the age of 22, serving until February 1946. Originally a textile worker, she became a stewardess while serving.

Beryl enlisted in December 1941, aged 20, working in the stores depot. She was discharged in December 1945.

The sisters’ surname has been selected from the city’s ANZAC register.

The renaming will result in nine properties gaining new addresses, and was approved during last week’s Community Focus Council Meeting at Clifton Springs Golf Club.

“Like so many wonderful Geelong men and women, the Chapman sisters served their country at a time of need during World War II,” veteran’s affairs portfolio chair Cr Eddy Kontelj said.

“It’s great to see their contribution recognised.

The council has also declared a special charge scheme for construction of a footpath, kerb and channel and road widening along an 83-metre stretch of land between 23 and 29 Ghazeepore Road, Waurn Ponds.

The project will provide proper pedestrian and vehicle access, improved pedestrian safety and will enhance the general amenity for the property included in the scheme.

The total project cost is $92,580, with the property owner to contribute $20,704 and the council to fund the remaining $71,876.
