STUDENTS from across Australia are being encouraged to apply for this year’s Prime Minister’s Spelling Bee.

Held annually nationwide, the free online competition is for Australian school students from Grade 3 to Year 8 across all states and territories.

Corangamite federal member Libby Coker said the Spelling Bee provided an opportunity for young wordsmiths to flex their intellectual muscles.

“It is a great way for schools and their students to develop a passion for prose, which helps improve literacy, comprehension and critical thinking.

“I would love to see all our local schools in Corangamite getting involved in the Prime Minister’s Spelling Bee and demonstrating the talent of this region’s students.”

Ms Coker said the Prime Minister’s Spelling Bee is a fun and confidence-building competition which promotes an appreciation of words and language in students.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese provided a statement of encouragement to Australian students following the launch of this year’s event.

“I’ve often said that education opens the doors of opportunity,” Mr Albanese said

“And the Prime Minister’s Spelling Bee is a great chance for kids across the country to improve their spelling and grow their communication skills.

“To every student across Australia giving it a go – good luck!”

Each age group national champion will travel to Canberra to meet the Prime Minister, and will win an iPad, a HarperCollins book pack and a $1,000 voucher for their school.

Students can register to take part in the competition by August 23 by heading to spelling-bee.com.au
