Summer programs resume for junior sailors
SUMMER sailing in Torquay will recommence next month as Torquay Sailing Club prepares to relaunch its junior programs for 2023.
Before its junior green fleet program resumes at the conclusion of the Christmas holidays, Torquay Sailing Club at Fishos is offering a five-day mid-week course for junior sailors on the week starting Monday, January 16.
Club commodore Chris Hordern said participants, primarily 8-15 year olds, will have the option to take part in either a morning (9am-noon) or afternoon (1-4pm) program.
“This program would be a great step to take for kids who are looking to join our green fleet, it’s a great introduction to sailing and it gets them up to speed, so when they start green fleet, they’ve already had a bit of a go,” Mr Hordern said.
The five-day program touches on all the basics of sailing, from sailing preparation to water etiquette, as newcomers and beginners become familiar with the OpenSkiffs and Hobie Wave Catamarans.
Participants will become proficient in independent sailing by getting out on the water in a group environment led by top-quality instructors from Torquay and Jan Juc.
Hordern said taking on the summer program was just one of many ways to become part an inclusive and social club.
“Besides Torquay being unique in the fact that it’s open ocean, it’s what I would coin a grassroots club,” Mr Hordern said.
“I think there is a view yacht clubs are snobby, high-end, sophisticated places, where in reality a club like Torquay’s is a true community club open to anyone of any background.
“It’s a great leveller, and a great way to share a common interest in the sport of sailing.”
