Sunflowers to bloom in Torquay
SURF Coast locals will have the chance to show off their sunflowers as the celebration of Sunflowers returns to Torquay tomorrow, January 25.
Taking place at the grassy area at Torquay Front Beach, the annual sunflower competition is an opportunity for growers to show off their plants and go in the running for a range of prizes.
Growers are asked to take their best, wildest and wackiest sunflowers to the event with competition categories including most unfortunate, best in vase, best dressed-up and many more.
“Everyone gets a prize, it could be anything at all,” Event co-organiser Sue Toskovski said
“People dress them up, put a smiley face on the sunflowers, put a little coat on it, there’s all types, in a pot, in a vase, has been, almost has been and barely made it.”
Ms Toskovski said the “sunflower queen” who also happens to be her mum, Vera Tosevksi, the reason behind the event, will be there to swap ideas and varieties on the day.
“She’s been planting sunflowers for about 10 years along the front of her place, all along the fence line and people would drive past and beep and stop.
“The organiser of the sunflower event, Bronwyn said we need to meet this woman and started a Facebook page and she’s been doing it every year since.”
This year’s celebration will include new varieties, with the hopes more people get into sowing sunflowers.
For the kids, a sunflower story time will be held along with the opportunity for colouring a sunflower page.
Those heading along with small-medium cut sunflowers are asked to take their own container with water to keep their flower looking its best.
The celebration will begin at 10am tomorrow.
