Surf Coast Century 12 opens registrations to public
REGISTRATIONS to be part of the 12th edition of the Surf Coast Century have opened, with more than 1,500 participants expected to take on the Century’s 50km and 100km routes.
Slated to take place on Saturday, September 16 at Anglesea, the Century offers a variety of terrain and scenery, with competitors tackling towering sea cliffs, remote wilderness, world-class beaches, wildflower hinterland and flowing coastal trails.
“It’s always fantastic to see competitors experience a race that gives them so much; the spectacular coastal terrain and the supportive environment,” Rapid Ascent general manager Sam Maffett said.
“We welcome all runners to be part of all this and more in September.”
Known for providing an ideal platform for first-time ultra-marathoners, the Surf Coast Century is relatively flat and non-technical, with all seven checkpoints evenly spread along the route.
The figure-eight course from Anglesea to Torquay takes participants along the beach, then returning through Moggs Creek and Aireys Inlet, before heading back to Anglesea on the Surf Coast Trail via Point Roadknight.
Many past participants and previous winners have fond memories of the race including last year’s winner Nicole Virant.
“Everything about the event felt so good,” she said.
“From conversations with other runners on course, to the beautiful views along the way.”
2020 winner Sarah Hedger also has a positive reflection on the event.
“I love running in the beautiful environment that the Surf Coast Century provides,” she added.
“It’s a big motivator and that’s why I keep coming back.”
The event will again be backed by the Surf Coast Shire, with Mayor Liz Pattison saying the Century has consolidated itself as a standout race on the Surf Coast Events calendar.
“Council has been delighted to support the Surf Coast Century and looks forward to the 12th edition of the event,” Cr Pattison said.
“We want to see events that encourage people to stay longer and appreciate and care for this place, particularly in the off-peak season; the Surf Coast Century ticks this box.
“I urge any visitors who are signing up to tackle the event to consider staying a night or two on the Surf Coast to soak up everything that makes our region so wonderful, from the beach and the bush, which they’ll experience first-hand, to food, markets and more.”
