Surf Coast Century opens registrations
ENTRIES have opened for this year’s “feel good ultra” with the Surf Coast Century to take over the Great Ocean Road later this year.
The Surf Coast Century will takes place on September 21 this year with participants encouraged to get in quick and cement their spot.
Rapid Ascent general manager Sam Maffett said the Century was often done as a bucket-list event for ultra-trail runners.
“The Century continues to offer so much more than just an achievable and varied course – it takes competitors on a spectacular journey with stunning views matched with a welcoming atmosphere and friendly camaraderie throughout.
“And we encourage all keen runners to be part of all this and more in September.”
The Surf Coast Century has been providing the ultimate trail-running challenge on the Surf Coast for 13 years, solidifying itself as a premier event on the Australian ultra-trail marathon calendar.
This year’s event will encompass a 100km individual event and 100km relay teams events with two, three, or four runners.
The Century has also revived the 50km run over the first half of the 100km course, last offered in 2016.
Last year’s Surf Coast Century men’s winner Andy McConnell has fond memories of his race.
“I wouldn’t have pushed so hard if it wasn’t such a nice place to be it was amazing, especially the people on course – everyone is really friendly making it a great day out,” Mr McConnell said.
“It’s a perfect ultra for first timers, great manageable trails, well-marked and spectacular views; generous cut-off times and overall a great atmosphere, highly recommend this event.”
The figure-eight course design course takes 100km competitors from Anglesea to Torquay along the beach, returning along the clifftop tracks and hinterland trails to Moggs Creek and Aireys Inlet; before heading back to Anglesea on the Surf Coast Walk trail, via Point Roadknight.
Competitors in the revived 50km course will follow the first half of the 100km course, rather than the second half used from 2017 to 2023.
