Surf Coast community to stop and remember

TODAY (November 11), the Surf Coast community will gather to honour those lost in combat and war through a Remembrance Day service at Point Danger ANZAC War Memorial in Torquay.

Each year, Remembrance Day is a day of commemoration for all Australians to remember the sacrifices made by men and women who have contributed to the evolution of the country.

Torquay RSL president Bob Tyler welcomed and encouraged members of the community to stop what they are doing at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month to pause and remember.

“It is on Remembrance Day, above all other days, that we recall the women and men who, through personal sacrifices, contributed to the evolution and identity of our country, Australia,” he said.

“We must never forget how much we owe to them.”

 

Many attendees at today’s ceremony and those spread across the country will be donning the signature red poppy which is a sign of remembrance.

Torquay RSL have been selling red poppies outside supermarkets in the leadup to today’s event and are hopeful many people will be wearing the badge.

“It is now more than 100 years since sales of poppies began to raise funds for needy veterans, wounded veterans and their families,” Mr Tyler said.

 

“We would like to see poppies being worn everywhere on Remembrance Day to show that we do remember the sacrifices made and knowing every dollar raised helps ex-service people and their families when they need.

“Most important, however, is to recall that the poppies bring to mind family members, friends, and all who have served and given their lives in defence of our nation”.

Today’s service at Point Danger ANZAC War Memorial begins at 10:40am.
