Surf Coast excitement as Matildas arrive in town

THERE was a buzz of excitement at Torquay’s Banyul-Warri Fields today (Friday, November 15), as two Matildas dropped in to see the young members of the Surf Coast Football Club.

Chloe Lincoln and Emily Gielnik from Australia’s national women’s soccer team delighted junior girls teams this afternoon, chatting to the players and participating in some of their games.

Lincoln spoke to the group about managing stress before competitions, training, travel and more.

She said seeing how much spending time with juniors meant to them and how many girls were getting involved in the sport now was what she enjoyed most about being out in the community.

“It’s fantastic to see so many that know the Matildas and know these names that have been around for so long, but since that World Cup it’s just blown up and it’s changed the generation and it’s really exciting to see where it’s headed.”

Gielnik’s advice to the young soccer enthusiasts was to keep playing with their friends, enjoy it, love it and stay active.

“There’s something special about being part of a team and going on a weekend and putting the shin pads on, they’re just some of my best childhood memories,” she said.

“I would encourage all girls, don’t worry about the ability that you’re at, just fall in love with the game and enjoy being in the team.”

 

The Surf Coast visit comes just three weeks ahead of the Matildas game in Geelong on December 7, which will see the team take on Chinese Taipei at GMHBA Stadium.

Lincoln, who plays for Western United, said the Matildas were really excited to be playing in Geelong and checking out the region.

“You can see such a community-based area and a really beautiful part of the world and I think the girls are going to be really excited to come down and get a better look.”

Gielnik makes her return to the squad after battling through injury. She said it was a great feeling to be back and looked forward to getting out there.

“I’m not quite as fit as I would like to be, I’m still building my minutes up, but I’m going to be ready to go in two weeks’ time.

“I’m looking forward to being back in that high-level environment, I thrive in those positions, I feel like I belong there and I’m excited to pull that green and gold jersey back on it I get the opportunity.”

The Matildas will also play Brazil at Suncorp Stadium on November 28.
