ONE of the stalwarts of Surf Coast FC has been honoured by having the club’s social room at its home in Torquay North named after him.

On Friday last week, a small crowd gathered to celebrate the contribution of former club president Joe Taylor and the naming of the Joe Taylor Club Room, part of the new extension to Grant Pavilion.

Surf Coast FC vice-president Steve Christou said Mr Taylor knew about the naming ceremony in advance but was “stoked” by the gesture.

He said Mr Taylor’s work as president and beyond had not only laid the foundations for the soccer club but had also made major contributions to the overall Banyul-Warri Fields precinct.

“He was one of the original founding members as well, and he was heavily involved with the precinct in organising the funding, so that was pretty massive for our club and for the whole area as well.

“Joe was instrumental from day one with our female program; we’ve always had a great female program and he was instrumental in setting that up.”

Surf Coast FC presently has more than 700 players across all its sides.
