THE Surf Coast will take part in this year’s Children’s Week celebrations with free family events in Torquay and Winchelsea.

Hosted by the Surf Coast Shire, the gatherings will feature puppet shows, pop-up activity stalls and a Welcome to Country.

To get involved, families can head to Elephant Walk Park in Torquay on Tuesday, October 21 between 10am and 12 noon, or HMK Kinder in Hesse Street, Winchelsea on Thursday, October 23 between 12.30pm and 2.30pm.

Cr Adrian Schonfelder said the events offered a chance to celebrate the region’s littlest residents.

“Childhood is such a precious time, full of wonder, growth and discovery,” he said.

“These events are all about bringing families together and offering fun activities that kids are such to love — and they’re free for everyone to enjoy.”

Families are encouraged to bring a hat, water bottle and sunscreen.

This year, Children’s Week will run from October 18–26, with the theme “Everyone should know about children’s rights”.

A national celebration, Children’s Week recognises the right of every child to enjoy their childhood — to thrive, learn, play and be heard, as set out in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.

A variety of activities, including Scottish highland dancing, interactive shows and come-and-try surfing sessions will also be held across Geelong over the next week.
