THE Surf Coast community will rally together and dip into the ocean next weekend at the second annual Torquay’s Big Plunge event which will raise funds for motor neuron disease (MND).

After more than 200 people attended the inaugural challenge last year, a passionate team of local Torquay residents leading the charge are hoping to get just as many locals down to Cosy Corner next Sunday (June 11) wearing a Big Freeze 9 beanie to jump into the icy water.

MND currently has no cure, with funds to support medical research into the degenerative condition.

Locals are flexing their muscles in support of the FightMND cause.

One of the local event co-ordinators Jo King-Hudson said there were no expectations of people having a full swim, rather just a quick plunge into the shallows to show their support.

“Plenty of locals on the Surf Coast love the ocean and the cold water, and we thought what better way to raise awareness than to all band together and get in there to support those fighting MND.

“People can stay in the water for as long as they want, however we ask them all to wear their beanies throughout their swim/dip so we can get some great photos and drone footage.

“We are also trying to get everyone to just wear their bathers only, which will be a challenge!”

The initiative raised around $2,500 last year.

Locals interested in taking part should meet at Cosy Corner at 2pm, giving them enough time to purchase a beanie ($25) or Sockit2MND football socks ($15) before the 2:30pm plunge.

Eftpos and cash sales will be available.
