THE Surf Coast Shire will be collecting extra unpaid kerbside waste bins around the region as it holds a bin amnesty.
Households pay a waste charge through their rates for four bins, however, can request extra or upgrade to larger size bins with user fees applying.
The bins are required to stay at the property when sold and council should be notified.
As part of the amnesty, unpaid kerbside bins will be identified and collected by the council, helping to reduce costs of rubbish collection.
The shire’s general manager of placemaking and environment Chris Pike said the shire wanted to ensure the system was effective and fair for everyone.
“Collecting unpaid kerbside waste bins is a cost to the community, with ratepayers covering the cost for others.
“All households that have paid for an extra bin or a larger bin will be receiving a letter explaining what bins they have on their property.
“At the same time, council staff have been placing stickers on these extra bins as we prepare to audit them.”
Bin stickering is presently occurring and once complete, the waste contractor will stop emptying bins not identified with the correct sticker.
These bins will then be removed, and bins without the Surf Coast Shire logo stamp will not be emptied.
For more information and to check if you have any extra bins, phone the shire on 5261 0600 or email [email protected] and include ‘Bin Amnesty’ in the subject line.
