DANCE sessions, exercise classes, ocean wading and pottery will be among the activities on offer across the Surf Coast Shire during Positive Ageing Month.

Held each year through October in support of the Victorian Seniors Festival, Positive Ageing Month supports people aged 55 and over with events that encourage social connection, community engagement, learning and an active lifestyle.

This year’s theme is “Connect, Create, Celebrate”, and more than 30 local events and activities will be taking place, including a rainbow community celebration at Lorne’s In The Skies restaurant on October 27 and a Sunday afternoon of music in Winchelsea on October 12.

There will also be opportunities to get on the tools in women’s or men’s community sheds, explore some history, try a hand at weaving and learn how to play petanque.

“Our annual celebration of people aged 55 and older just keeps getting bigger and better with the diverse and engaging range of activities on offer across the shire,” councillor Tony Phelps said.

“We love to see people being active, involved and making connections at any time, but this month serves up some really special opportunities for trying something new or revitalising an interest, skill or hobby.

“It’s about connecting with others, having fun and discovering what some of our many wonderful community organisations can offer year-round.

“Check out the busy Positive Ageing Month calendar now and start planning your adventure.”

Printed calendars can be collected from local community houses or the shire’s civic office at 1 Merrijig Drive in Torquay.

Some activities link with other dedicated events, such as Ageism Awareness Day, Get Online Week and Nationals Carers Week.

The Victorian government will support the Victorian Seniors Festival with free public transport for Victorian Seniors Card holders between October 5 and October 12.
