THE Surf Coast Women’s Health Group was founded last year by three practitioners who saw a critical gap in the healthcare system and decided to be part of the solution.

Guided by its mission to be “positive disruptors” in the industry and challenge the existing healthcare disparities faced by women, the clinic provides specialised services tailored specifically to the needs of women and girls over the age of 12.

The clinic was launched just seven months ago and has already cemented its reputation as a trusted space where women’s health concerns are no longer overlooked and ignored.

The Surf Coast Women’s Health Group team embrace each other after winning GAWK’s Business of the Year award.

It is this impact that most impressed this year’s judges, earning the clinic the prestigious title of GAWK’s Business of the Year at the 2024 Torquay Business Awards, presented by the Surf Coast Times.

“They strive to make a lasting impact and their application effectively demonstrated this commitment,” the judging panel said.

“The group has established a strong client base and offers a range of valuable services in a short time.

“Their contributions to the community highlight their dedication to improving the lives of women in the Surf Coast region.”

Founding member and co-director Niamh Logue said the win was recognition of the Surf Coast Women’s Health Group’s passionate practitioners who believe wholeheartedly in what they do.

“It stems from the community just backing us and supporting us in every possible way.

“It’s been very motivating because starting a new business is a risk and its difficult and you never know how it’s going to go, and I think we’re just blessed to be in Torquay because we feel like the women and girls are behind us.”

Ms Logue has been a general practitioner for almost 10 years and in that time has consistently heard concerns from women and girls that their health isn’t taken seriously and their care suffers from a lack of research.

“I just thought in 2024, that’s a bit ridiculous and there’s a lot we can do for that, and about that, and just felt like it was time to make a new standard for women’s health and primary care and have a multidisciplinary team to achieve that.

“No one can do it alone, and no speciality and no practitioner can do it alone, and it’s about coming together with all of our skills and hopefully providing a good service.

“There’s a lot we don’t know, and we want to get better at what we do and the care that we provide, and we really feel like we can.

“In the long-term we’d like to see a women’s health clinic as a standard part of every town, whether or not we’re behind that remains to be seen, but I feel like now that we’re here that should be the new standard for every community.”
