BARWON Water’s contribution towards local surf lifesaving clubs continued this year with Ocean Grove and Apollo Bay SLSCs receiving grants to purchase essential lifesaving equipment.

Barwon Water’s surf lifesaving sponsorship program was established in 2006 and provides $2,500 grants to regional clubs on a rotational basis.

Since the program’s inception, $120,000 has been donated to clubs.

Ocean Grove SLSC used its grant this year to buy rescue boards and lifejackets, while Apollo Bay SLSC spent the money on resuscitation equipment.

Barwon Water general manager of customers and community Jo Murdoch said the water authority was proud of its long association with the region’s surf lifesaving clubs.

“Our surf lifesaving clubs are a vital part of our community, helping visitors to local beaches have a safe and enjoyable experience,” Ms Murdoch said.

“At Barwon Water, we are very pleased to be able to help them through our community sponsorship program.”

Ocean Grove SLSC’s Anna McDonald said the funds had been put to good use.

“The new rescue boards have already been great value to us this summer, and we hope to get much more use out of them throughout the year.”

Minister for Water Lisa Neville welcomed the grant announcement.

“This is a fantastic investment in a critical service,” she said.

“Our lifesaving clubs ensure our beaches are safe for tourists and residents and are run by volunteers.

“This funding helps ensure they have the equipment they need but also frees up time from fundraising.”
