Surfcoast Basketball Association to run local competition

April 3, 2019 BY

The Surfcoast Basketball Association is taking over management of the Surf Coast’s basketball leagues.

BASKETBALL games in the Surf Coast Shire will be managed by a community-run organisation into the future, following the plan’s approval by the Surf Coast Shire.

At their meeting last month, councillors resolved to hand over management of basketball games in Torquay and surrounding areas to the Surfcoast Basketball Association.

The shire will also contribute a one-off establishment contribution of $15,000, all of the existing equipment and uniforms, and in-kind administrative support during the first season between April and September.

In a statement, the Surfcoast Basketball Association (which is affiliated with Basketball Victoria) welcomed the handover.

“The change will result in more games and more participation opportunities for all age groups.

“Basketball Victoria, through its member affiliates, are able to offer a range of development programs and competitions for players, coaches and referees, as well as further opportunities to participate in tournament play such as Country Championships and the premier representative competition, the Victorian Junior Basketball League.

“Since the Surfcoast Basketball Association received full affiliation status with Basketball Victoria, they have been working hard to make certain that the transition period is a smooth and easy journey for all members of the Association.

The Association is excited to be able to offer new and exciting programs that will ensure that all community members wishing to participate in the sport will be able to do so.”
