DONORS are being sought for next month’s Surf Coast Relay for Life.

Funds raised from the event go to Cancer Council Victoria, a non-profit organisation that centres on cancer research and prevention as well as patient support.

Torquay Relay for Life chair Bob Tyler hoped that despite the bushfires being the focus of many fundraising efforts, people would expand their generosity to fighting cancer.

“This year, with less teams registered so far, our figures are well down and we are seeking help from businesses, service organisations and individuals to lift our figures to a reasonable amount.

“Money raised by Relay for Life events in Victoria fund internationally recognised research, which underpins Cancer Council’s work in prevention and support and drives improvements in cancer survival.”

The Cancer Council has influenced much progress since it was founded in 1936. They have been part of preventative initiatives such as making pubs and clubs smoking free venues, regulating the solarium industry, the introduction of plain packaging for cigarettes and the Slip!Slop!Slap! campaign.

But despite the success of these programs, more than 30,000 Victorians are still diagnosed with cancer every year, with more than 10,000 dying from the disease.

Mr Tyler said the relay itself was a powerful remembrance of those who have died from cancer and a celebration of those who have survived.

“Being a part of the Surf Coast Relay is a meaningful and practical way to support those affected by cancer in this area.”

The Surf Coast Relay for Life begins at 6.45pm on March 13 and runs through to 1pm on March 14.

It includes candle lighting ceremonies and various forms of live entertainment.

An information session for Surf Coast Relay for Life will be held at Polwarth Oval on March 4 at 7pm. The session is open to all.
