WHILE the world’s best surfers waited for Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach to recommence on Friday (April 7), OneWave hosted a special ‘Fluro Friday’ surf session at Torquay Front Beach with more than 40 locals who dressed in glittering outfits to share waves and stories to raise awareness about mental health.

In collaboration with Hydralyte and the World Surf League, OneWave ran ‘Free the Funk’ programs and surf sessions at six schools during the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach period, educating more than 2,000 people about mental health and providing participants with tips which can be used for the rest of their lives.

Locals turned out in full force regardless of the stormy weather.

OneWave founder Grant Trebilco said he was thankful for the opportunity to surf and educate locals.

“Big thanks to the World Surf League and Hydralyte for helping bring colour to mental health at six local schools along the Surf Coast and letting 2,000 young people know it’s ok, not to be ok,” Trebilco said.

“Even on the stormiest day, 40 people showed up in colour at Fluro Friday for mental health, party waves, good vibes and community.”

The OneWave Fluro Friday events have been running across the globe for ten years.
