THE Surf Coast and Bellarine surfing community are being encouraged to get behind the return of Surf Aid’s Make A Wave campaign.

The fifth annual edition of the popular surfing challenge will see surfers hit the waves every day in September to raise funds for Surf Aid’s vital programs.

All proceeds will go towards improving access to healthcare, clean water and food security in remote surf communities.

Surf Aid chief executive officer Doug Lees is excited about this year’s challenge.

“With the continued support of our incredible partners and in celebration of SurfAid’s 25th anniversary this year, we’re gearing up for our biggest Make A Wave challenge yet,” he said.

“With every wave caught, we’re helping families in remote surf communities get access to essential services like healthcare, nutritious food, and clean water.”

Surfing Victoria spokesperson Liam Robertson echoed his stoke.

“Surf Aid do an incredible job raising much needed funds for remote surf communities.

“Surfing Victoria are proud to support the Surf Aid Make a Wave Challenge in September and encourage all surfers to be part of it.”

Rip Curl will again be a driving force of the campaign, championing the challenge with their commitment to exploring and protecting remote surf locations.

Notable surfers to be joining in this year include Stephanie Gilmore, Owen Wright and Erin Brooks.

“Participating in the Make A Wave challenge was an incredible experience,” Wright said.

“Knowing that each wave I caught helped families gain access to the things we take for granted like clean water made every session even more meaningful. I can’t wait to do it again this September.”

Since its inception in 2021, Make A Wave has united surfers from 28 countries, raising over $2.6 million for SurfAid.

This effort has allowed SurfAid to positively impact tens of thousands of people in remote surf communities such as in Rote and the Mentawai islands, where access to basic services is limited.
