Take your dog to breakfast and learn about hoodies
THE Friends of the Hooded Plover Surf Coast are holding four “dogs’ breakfasts” events to help spread the word about hooded plover protection on the Surf Coast.
Supported by representatives from Coastcare, Parks Victoria, Birdlife Australia and the Great Ocean Road Coast Committee, the free events are open to anyone who would like to learn more about responsible dog walking and efforts to protect the threatened bird species.
The hooded plover (also known as the “hoodie”) is an Australian shorebird that faces many threats to its survival, including the disturbance of its beach nests by dogs and people.
In Victoria, hooded plovers are classed as a vulnerable species.
Friends of the Hooded Plover Surf Coast’s Sue Guinness said the four breakfasts were funded through the state government’s Coastcare Grants.
“Come along to a free breakfast, learn about the threatened hooded plover, responsible dog walking, and how you can help the local hoodies breeding on our beaches.
“There will be giveaways for all – even the dog!” Events will be held at:
- Urquhart Bluff, Aireys Inlet – January 6, 8-10am
- Fishermans Beach, Torquay – January 9 – 7-9am
- Point Roadknight Back Beach – January 11, 7-9
- Inlet Beach, Airey Inlet – January 13, 7-9am
Want to get more actively involved? The Friends of the Hooded Plover Surf Coast are looking for more volunteers.
To volunteer, email Birdlife Australia at [email protected].
Meanwhile, a shorebird protection zone is presently being trialled at Point Impossible.
