Team T strapped in for bumper season
SUMMER is knocking on Torquay’s door and newly opened Nippers vacancies are filling up quick.
After more than two interrupted years of lifesaving programs, this season’s Nippers is expected to a bumper program with hundreds of children taking part.
“We’ve made Torquay Nippers all about inclusion, respect and encouragement,” Director of Junior Development at Torquay SLSC, Matt Carmichael.
“It’s so amazing to see other children, parents and of course our coaching staff cheering Nippers on to complete activities like ocean swims and board paddling – things that might have been completely new to them just weeks ago.”
Mr Carmichael said Torquay SLSC’s Nippers program is about having a go and encouraging participants.
“With all of the interruptions of the last two years, there has been a real emphasis placed on the social side of Nippers for the children – Torquay SLSC and all of the coaching staff have ramped up the fun factor,” he said.
“Not only do the kids benefit hugely from Torquay Nippers, but it’s also great to see all of the parents making friends and connections with other parents.
“There’s a real community spirit that has been built up around what we’re calling ‘Team-T’ this season.”
The club confirmed it has secured more resources to accommodate for additional spaces this season, stating it has supersized its program compared to recent years.
“We feel that Torquay Surf Life Saving Club has always had an important role in developing future leaders of our community and it all starts with Nippers,” club president Julian Sweeney said.
“We’ve focused this year on fun, safety, and encouragement in the hopes that we can help children of all ages get involved and back to being more social.
“Torquay Nippers is not just about Torquay kids, it a great program for kids from all over because they learn to make friends, have a go at new things and [take] onboard the values that our club holds true.”
The extra vacancies the club has available are filling fast and all Torquay Nippers need to be enrolled before December 1.
