Barwon Heads section 6 girls won the flag from Wandana Heights, following a play-off set, left to right, it’s Monique, Grace, Lily, Olivia and Bella.

SATURDAY March 23, tennis grand final day and would you believe it – rain?

Junior matches were delayed by close to an hour, just as they were almost exactly a year prior on grand final day! Thankfully it all cleared to a sunny day for the seniors.

Tennis In Geelong went to Grovedale tennis club, site of several grand final matches, including a classy match in the juniors section 1, which saw a talented Newcomb team score from a brave Wandana crew.

In senior ranks, the youthful Wandana Heights boys proved to be top dogs in section 1 mens, taking the flag in a tight match over Barwon Heads.

Seniors had 10 mixed grades and five mens, with the new initiative of Tennis Geelong giving the higher finishing teams “home” finals matches.

There were 23 grades of junior players, made up of 14 boys sections and nine in the girls. Girls regularly play in the boys sections – and often beat them too.

Big junior winners were Geelong Lawn, taking out the top four grades of girls and winning three flags in the boys divisions. Phenomenal.

All senior and junior results can be accessed via Match Centre. Check it out.

Now that it’s all done and dusted for summer, there’s just a few weeks off before the winter season begins on Saturday April 27. See you all then!
