The running, fitness and lifestyle destination on Torquay’s doorstep
NIGEL and Alison Muscroft are the founders of Torquay’s go-to fitness wear store, The Happy Runner.
Opening the doors to their Bell Street shopfront in October 2015, the couple decided to combine their personal training experience and establish a sports outlet where people could find exactly what they needed.
“We wanted to create a lifestyle running store and one-stop shop for runners from pros to beginners,” Nigel said.
“We realised it was getting harder and harder to drive to Geelong and there was nothing like it in Torquay, so we came up with the concept and created a store where the customer can come in and talk about running and get inspired.
“People can find more than just shoes. They can get everything they need for running from apparel and technical running socks to compression gear and sports nutrition for endurance runners.”
Catering for all fitness types, The Happy Runner also stocks yoga and pilates tights as well as apparel for circuit and high intensity interval training such as F45.
Nigel, whose background is in marketing, also runs personal training sessions through his business Surf Fitness.
“We’re both into fitness and both runners and mountain bikers. We know our stuff, and we know our products very well.”
The Happy Runner offers a professional fitting and analysis service in-store, giving customers peace of mind that they’re buying the right training shoes for them.
But it’s the free social run club that Nigel and Alison are most proud of.
Every Thursday, the club meets at the store and runs between 6-8 kilometres around the Torquay area.
“It’s a great way to meet likeminded people of equivalent fitness and to find training partners,” Nigel said.
“We’ve been running the social run club ever since we opened.”
