THE Sands Torquay not only is a hub for live music, fine dining, and luxury accommodation, but has also staked its claim as having one of the best golf courses in the country.

Under the guidance of a fresh golf team, headed up by lead golf consultant Patrick Young, the course and its facilities continue to go from strength to strength.

Mr Young brings 40 years of golfing experience to The Sands, having played as a professional in Asia for 24 years as well as holding management positions at golf clubs across Singapore, Hong Kong, Vietnam and China.

The new Torquay resident looks forward to the challenges that The Sands position brings as the team build towards a sustainable and successful future under new ownership.

“It’s been a great first nine months looking after the golf here at The Sands, and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed putting a great team together that can successfully operate golf and look at the course and see how it fits in with our guest experience,” Mr Young said.

“It’s rare to have a championship golf course in such pristine conditions right at our doorstep and it’s something that we want our guests and locals to enjoy.

“We want people to realise that not only is the course for our resort guests, but anyone can come and pay to play, we are fully inclusive, and it comes at a fraction of the price as some of our competitors.”

Mr Young has high aspirations for the course at The Sands with new competitions on the horizon, which are set to attract some of the best golfers from across Australia and the world.

“Outside of making the course and facility inclusive for all, we are thrilled to announce we will once again run the Pro-Am this year in October after its success under Destination Leisure last year.

“We also can’t wait to have the best players in Australia come to the course for the Australian Seniors Open, which we have secured the rights to for the next three years.

“These two events will no doubt put The Sands on the map in the golf market.”

He said next year’s March seniors event would be showcased on Kayo and is set to attract Australia’s best homegrown names such as Peter Senior, Ian Baker Finch, Roger Davis and plenty more.
