THE Sands Resort in Torquay celebrated its 21st birthday on Saturday with a special Ambrose tournament, cake and champagne.
About 170 members of the club took part in the tournament and enjoyed a free barbecue to mark the occasion.

Course designer and nine-time PGA Tour winner Stuart Appleby also sent a video message to The Sands’ members, recorded while he was playing in the US Senior Open Championship at Broadmoor Golf Course in Colorado Springs.
“Congratulations, can you believe it? Your 21st,” Appleby said.

“It’s a bit crazy; I remember thinking what things I would do to a course, how could I put my fingerprint on it? I hope I did, I’m sure I frustrated some of you.
“But now that the course is obviously very mature and settled down, it’s just amazing that much time has gone by.”

He congratulated everyone involved with the club since its opening in 2004.
“It’s a beautiful part of the world; I need to get back,” he said. “I’m sure you guys are looking forward to getting into some fine weather golf.”
