STATE government ministers visited Torquay this week for a tour of the up-and-running Multi Arts Centre.

The MAC opened in March last year after a $240,000 state grant transformed the former Surfcoast Sports and Recreation Centre at Beach Road into a creative hub.

Torquay Theatre Troupe, Surf Coast Arts Space and dedicated arts collective MAC Inc are among the main tenants of the facility, which hosts events such as theatre shows, art exhibitions, music gigs, and literary events.

The centre’s fit-out included gallery land theatre lighting, transportable seating for 100 people, plus furniture and fixtures.

Regional Development Minister Harriet Shing, whose agency provided the grant, said the facility was transformative for the local arts community.

“The Torquay Multi Arts Centre is a game-changer for the Surf Coast community, bringing people together and allowing the vibrant arts community to share its talent with locals and visitors to the region,” she said.

Creative Industries Minister Steve Dimopoulos and South Barwon MP Darren Cheeseman said the state initiative had helped breathed new life into the underutilised space to boost the region’s award-winning creatives.

Surf Coast Shire mayor Libby Stapleton praised the centre’s users for making it a success in its formative years.

“The success of the MAC is testament to the passion and talent of our local arts practitioners and demonstrates the value of facilities that serve as a home for creativity, enterprise and collaboration,” she said.
