Tigers announce women’s senior team
THE Torquay Football Club’s (TFC) first senior women’s team is ready to roar and is looking forward to its debut this season, with pre-season training already underway in preparation for round one on Sunday April 7.
Taking direction from head coach Tim Humphries and assistant coach Lisa Robinson, the inaugural Torquay senior side will train on Tuesday and Thursday evenings before playing Sunday matches.
Paris Nigro, TFC’s administration officer, senior women’s football co-ordinator and leadership player, said the addition of a senior women’s team to the line-up was an exciting direction for the club.
“It has been very rewarding to see the positivity from the players, parents and supporters,” she said.
“This now gives girls a pathway to play senior women’s football and beyond.”
Local Surf Coast women and keen athletes from surrounding neighbourhoods will form the long-awaited team, with many female players jumping at the opportunity to call McCartney Oval home.
Senior player Lahnee Firth said the numbers at training sessions so far had been encouraging, highlighting how important it was to celebrate women in sport.
“There’s a real excitement and sense of positivity in the community about the team,” said Lahnee.
“It’s amazing to be creating opportunities for women of all ages and generations in sport.
“Everyone is getting involved both on and off the field.”
The club has five junior girls’ football teams, comprising of two Under 12 teams, two Under 15 teams and one Under 18 team.
The Torquay Youth Girls (Under 18) football team began in 2015, growing from three players in the first training session to more than 25 listed players.
