LIFEBLOOD has thanked the Torquay community for what it described as another successful visit to the coastal town earlier this month.
The organisation’s mobile blood donor centre collected more than 150 donations between February 10 and February 14.
Surf Coast Shire councillor Liz Pattison was among the donors, and said it was wonderful to have the opportunity to donate so close to home.
“I have been donating for many years after initially being invited to give it a go by a school friend.”
“I continue to donate because it’s fun, especially when you bring your friends. Donating is easy to do, and it feels good to give back to those in need.” Liz said.
Cr Pattison encouraged people who’ve never donated to consider giving it a go.
“The experience is lovely, with friendly and knowledgeable staff. It really helps people in community,” she said.
Cancer treatment, emergency surgery, road trauma and bleeding during childbirth are some of the most common uses for donated blood in Australia.
Every week Lifeblood needs 33,000 blood and plasma donations around the nation to meet patient needs. Each donation can save up to three lives.
Lifeblood spokesperson Emily Granland said you never know when you or someone you love may require blood.
“We rely on the ongoing kindness of the community to donate to meet the nation’s growing patient demand.
“Blood can be donated once every 12 weeks. That equals four donations a year and totals just four hours of time. It is a small sacrifice for a life-changing impact.”
The mobile blood donor centre will return to Torquay from May 26 to May 30. Existing and new donors are welcome.
To book a donation, phone 13 14 95 or book online at lifeblood.com.au or on the DonateBlood app.
There is also a Lifeblood centre in Geelong that collects blood, plasma and platelet donations. This centre is located at 237-243 Ryrie Street and is open seven days a week.
