TORQUAY Bowls Club is going from strength to strength – celebrating a Torquay Business Awards win, a new roof over the deck and planning for their third green expansion.

Taking out the Tourism and Hospitality Award in this year’s Torquay Business Awards is the latest achievement for the club, a recognition for the team’s hard work.

Torquay Bowls Club manager Andrew Dodson said he believed the club surprised people with how much they do, which contributed to the awards win.

“We’re heavily providing ourselves as a community hub, we have a good half a dozen community groups use our facilities for free, they have meetings there, they bring Christmas parties there.

“When I first started, our Bistro was ranked 70 on TripAdvisor, we’re now top four on TripAdvisor so our reputation with food has certainly improved, the Bistro has tripled its turnover since I started in 2021.”

Since coming on as manager, the club has evolved from being just a sporting destination with a few drinks and some food, to now featuring a fully-fledged restaurant and bar.

The new roof over the deck also means they are better positioned to welcome people all year round.

The deck’s transformation will continue into the new year, with an expansion planned for February and blinds and heaters also going in for all-weather usage.

Also, in a major step for the club, it is moving towards its expansion to create a third green, with planning permits before council.

The proposed third green aims to accommodate increased participation and enhance the experience for members, visitors and community groups.

Mr Dodson said the project was about more than just improving the facilities.

“It’s about strengthening the community bonds that make this club so special.

“We want to create a space where people of all ages and backgrounds can come together, enjoy the sport and connect with each other.”

The additional green will also solidify the club’s role as a thriving community hub within Torquay, welcoming people of all ages and abilities.

Mr Dodson thanked the community for their support over the years and for helping the club grow.
